Program Overview

Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Technicians are passionate about machines and appreciate the mechanics of production. They stay updated on the latest industrial hardware and software. You’ll learn how to repair, maintain, calibrate, adjust and install industrial measuring and control equipment. Optional co-op placements offer an opportunity for advanced training in writing specifications for required equipment, equipment purchasing, and quality testing. We’ll get you ready to join the fastest growing job sector in the tech industry today.

The requirements for this diploma program may be achieved with three years of full-time study.

      Career Possibilities

      As a graduate of this program, you may be employed in the design, production, sales, installation and maintenance of industrial automation systems. These industrial installations may be in the fields of oil refining, electrical power generation, pulp and paper manufacturing, mining and many others. The expertise of industrial control technologists is in demand in many parts of the country as well as abroad.

      This course is designed to introduce electrical concepts. Emphasis is placed on Direct Current (DC) characteristics and series, parallel and complex circuits. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce basic electrical equipment. Emphasis is placed on a variety of equipment, including: conductors and cables, wireways, raceways and fittings, support components, boxes and enclosures and wiring devices. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce lighting and communication systems. Emphasis is placed on lighting systems, lighting controls, as well as communication systems and their applications and operation. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce Alternating Current (AC) electrical concepts. Emphasis is placed on AC circuits and associated equipment. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to help students strengthen their fundamental skills in writing clear, effective sentences and paragraphs, and enable them to create organized, unified and coherent documents. The writing process is introduced. Students will recognize the importance of writing for the intended purpose and audience.

      This course is designed to introduce technical writing and computer applications. Emphasis is placed on technical documentation and the use of commercially available computer software. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.
       

      This course is designed to introduce voltage drop and power loss, grounding and bonding and single-phase service. Emphasis is placed on the Canadian Electrical Code, the effect on a circuit of voltage drop, grounding and bonding equipment and the installation of single-phase services. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      The overall program goal of the co-op experience is to complement academic studies with related work experience.  Co-op students can gain enriched understandings of their academic program through practical application. Moreover, the co-op experience can motivate students to further education as well as lead to relevant employment after graduation.  Through their work experiences, students will develop and refine employability skills, gain an understanding of career opportunities in their field, and realities of the workplace.  Students are required to follow guidelines as stipulated in the “ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Co-op Education” process.

      This course is designed to introduce DC circuits and pressure measurement devices. Emphasis will be placed on the use of multimeters and basic pressure measurement devices. Learning will be achieved through laboratory activities.

      This course is designed to introduce process measurement. Emphasis will be placed on theory of operation of basic process measurement devices. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce basic electrical and process measurement equipment. Emphasis is placed on conduit, conductors and cables, wireways, raceways, and fittings, support components, boxes and enclosures and wiring devices as well as temperature, level, and flow measuring devices. Learning will be achieved through laboratory activities.

      This course is designed to introduce process measurement calibration. Emphasis will be placed on process measurement calibration procedures and equipment. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce AC theory, process measurement equipment calibration, communication systems and luminaires and lighting controls. Emphasis is placed on AC circuits, process measurement equipment calibration standards and equipment, lighting systems, lighting controls and communication systems and their applications and operation.       This course is designed to introduce on/off control devices. Emphasis is placed on types of on/off control devices, their characteristics and operation. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities

      This course is designed to introduce maintenance and troubleshooting of process measurement devices, on/off control devices, grounding and bonding equipment and voltage drop and power loss in circuits. Emphasis is placed on troubleshooting and maintenance procedures for process measurement devices, the effect of voltage drop on a circuit, grounding and bonding equipment, the installation of single-phase services and types of on/off control devices. Learning will be achieved through laboratory activities.

      This course is designed to introduce maintenance and troubleshooting of process measurement equipment. Emphasis is placed on proper procedures to maintain, troubleshoot and replace process measurement and indicating devices. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to prepare students for level 1 instrumentation and level 1 industrial electrician apprenticeship exams. Emphasis is placed on reading and understanding apprenticeship exam questions. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course is designed to introduce pressure measurement. Emphasis will be placed on the theory of operation of basic pressure measurement devices. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      This course forms the foundations of technical mathematics. Topics covered include fundamental numerical calculations, manipulation of algebraic expressions, and solving equations, system of equations, and word problems. Learning is achieved through lectures, classroom examples and working out problems.

      This course is designed for students to learn more advanced algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. Topics include quadratic equations, trigonometry, logarithms, and vectors.

      This workshop introduces students to the process of finding employment. It explores the various strategies and resources available, and examines the role of social media.

      This course is designed to introduce the concepts of energy. Emphasis will be placed on the principles of thermal energy and its application on fluids. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.
       

      This course is designed to introduce mechanical and electrical drawings, schematics and specifications. Emphasis is placed on extracting information from various types of industrial and commercial drawings, schematics and specifications. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.

      A safe and healthy workplace is the responsibility of the employer and the employee. This course introduces students to the importance of working safely and addresses how employers and employees can control the hazards and risks associated with the workplace. Students will also learn about the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders including WorkSafeNB, the employer and the employee in ensuring workplaces are safe.

      This course is designed to introduce material handling and use of access equipment. Emphasis will be placed on safe hoisting, lifting and rigging, safe use of material handling equipment, proper use of personnel access apparatus and effective worksite organization. Learning will be achieved through lectures and in-class activities.
