ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ honours four exceptional alumni at annual awards ceremony

FREDERICTON –Four exceptional New Brunswick Community College (ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½) alumni were honoured yesterday for their unique contributions to the socio-economic prosperity of New Brunswick.

The ceremony for the second annual ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Alumni Recognition Awards was held yesterday afternoon at Government House in Fredericton. Recipients Bernice Lanigan, Bill Ward, Arthur Tucker and Gary Hall accepted awards for Friend of New Brunswick, Community Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Young Alumni, respectively.

Hosted by the Honourable Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and Susan Murchison, Chair, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Board of Governors, the ceremony also included Deputy Premier Stephen Horsman and Marilyn Luscombe, President and CEO of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.

“The four alumni we are celebrating have made a difference – by creating jobs, by inspiring women to choose careers they never envisioned possible and by inspiring young people in their communities,” said Marilyn Luscombe, President and CEO of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½. “They are the living proof of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s vision of transforming lives and communities.”

The Friend of New Brunswick award was bestowed upon Bernice Lanigan, an alumna of the Chemical Technology program. She built a successful career with NB Power Point Lepreau Generating Station and is a model for young female students who aspire to careers in trades and technology. Through her leadership in establishing the Women in Nuclear New Brunswick chapter - among other initiatives, she has inspired New Brunswick youth to consider careers in this sector.

“It was a great honor and privilege to be recognized for the contributions related to the award,” said Lanigan. “I feel that my strong foundational base with ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and inspiring mentors in the nuclear industry have contributed so much to my career and this award. I feel very proud to be among the established Alumni and boast about ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ trades every chance I get.”

Recognized for Entrepreneurship, Arthur Tucker is an alumnus of the Civil Engineering Technology program. He started his career at a local surveying company. He provided the leadership for the eventual merger of the company with one of the world’s largest engineering firms. Along the way, he grew the company to 80 employees from 10 and completed his MBA while serving as the company’s president.

Bill Ward was recognized for Community Leadership thanks to his efforts to create recreational and social opportunities for youth in his community of Metepenagiag First Nation. Volunteering thousands of hours since his youth, Bill, an alumnus of the Business Administration: Accounting program, went on to become a leader in his community and was later elected Chief.

The Young Alumni award recipient, Gary Hall was recognized for his rapid career advancement in the financial industry after graduating from the Business Administration: Investment Management program. He is respected by his colleagues and is committed to volunteering for community events that support youth.

The Entrepreneurship, Community Leadership and Young Alumni recipients received medals that were handcrafted by Aitken’s Pewter and feature the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ logo and six diamond shapes representing ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½’s six regions in New Brunswick.

Bernice Lanigan received a custom award designed by renowned New Brunswick metal artist, and New Brunswick College of Craft and Design instructor, Brigitte Clavette, and which was inspired by New Brunswick’s own fiddleheads.

Every year, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ will recognize outstanding alumni as part of the Alumni Recognition Awards.
